Apple’s lawsuit accusing OpenAI of taking trade secrets for its consumer-hardware effort looks like corporate combat. The more important signal is what they are fighting over: who owns the AI interface accompanying the customer through the day.
It may be glasses, earbuds, a watch, a health sensor or a phone behaving differently. The device matters less than the promise: better context, greater privacy and assistance without opening an application.
If that promise holds, AI interventions multiply. Today, a patient must decide to search for a symptom, access question or treatment concern. An ambient agent could recognize the situation, connect it with previous context and offer private help at the moment of uncertainty. An HCP could request evidence during a consultation or capture an unanswered question immediately afterward.
The device does not create the answer economy. It removes the friction that currently limits it.
That is the connection pharma marketers should track. Every additional assistance moment gives the customer’s AI another opportunity to select, summarize or ignore a brand’s information. The commercial contest moves from attracting a visit to becoming a trusted ingredient in the answer.
This is already happening without new hardware. A 2026 audit found Google AI Overviews on 87.7% of 900 US health queries, while only 46.2% of their citations overlapped with leading organic results. A brand can therefore perform well in SEO and still be absent—or poorly represented—when an AI constructs the response.
The immediate issue is not building a wearable experience. It is discovering whether existing HCP and patient journeys are already becoming answer journeys.
Ask. At the next scheduled search or digital-performance review, the brand lead should ask the digital experience owner to add a small GEO baseline, not launch another workstream. For 10 priority HCP and patient questions already in the journey plan, compare traditional search visibility with answers from Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT and Gemini. Measure accuracy, authoritative citation, competitive presence, safety context and the recommended next step. The goal is to decide whether GEO should remain monitored, enter the existing SEO roadmap or receive an accountable owner. Add one device watchpoint to quarterly planning: meaningful weekly adoption plus stable identity, permission and measurement controls. Until then, improve the answer layer—not the hardware campaign.
